The Tragedy of Macbeth

Written by: William Shakespeare
Production by: Almeida Theatre
Directed by: Yael Farber
Filmed and Produced for screen by: North South
Distribution: Live Stream + BBC Four + Almeida Online

Yaël Farber directs Olivier Award-nominee James McArdle and Four-time Academy Award-nominated Saoirse Ronan, in an elemental production about a world in transformation, the shadows in all of us, and one couple’s spine-chilling quest for power.

The film was directed and produced by North South for a run of 5 live streamed performances, captured in front of a live audience. After a short run on the Almeida’s On Demand player, it then TX’d on the BBC.

The creative approach was to keep all cameras moving in order to capture the depth and texture on stage. By combining ARRI Amira’s on dollies with a Technocrane and a ZeeGee, audiences at home were brought closer to the exhilarating relationships and raw emotion on stage. The dynamic plan ensured the cameras were fully able to explore the environment, offering powerful new perspectives on the work.
